Bobolinks – flock of 6, Eastern Norfolk County
We have been seeing Bobolinks for about a week. Yesterday there were 6 together. Going out to try to get some pix. We also have barn swallows at the winery, ground nesting northern harriers in the middle of the farm, & lots of goldfinches. We have occasional sightings of a yellow warbler, and Baltimore oriole.
Northern Harrier shows (unscheduled) on Con. 13
We are experiencing a glorious spring on the eastern side of Norfolk County. Where to start? Well the cold weather seemed to delay things, so we are still enjoying the singing of spring peepers and chorus frogs in the valley. There are lots of tree frogs who will be with us into summer. The birdz? […]
Tundra Swans & Redwingwed Blackbirds are back; Villa Nova Winery
If you are looking for signs of spring we can report some major progress. We have heard & seen male Red winged Blackbirds calling Saturday&Sunday, and today saw a flock of 15 Tundra Swans overhead. Of course the biggest sign of spring out here is when you see steam billowing from Chambers maple syrup operation […]
Yes we are open weekends and spring is on the way.
The first sign of spring out here is that the Chambers maple syrup operation on Villa Nova Road, starts to be more visible, as orange hoses snake through the snow. This is followed by billowing steam clouds as the syrup making begins. Its a great place to visit on weekends, to get your fill of […]

Monarchs, honey-bees and cider
Some good news for friends of the earth. We have seen over 10 monarch butterflies in the last week, after seeing only 2 all summer. Last year, it was 2-3 over the whole summer. I have also heard comments about not seeing any fireflies. Our valley is a giant firefly refuge, and they were abundant […]
VNE Winery Closed Sat 16th & SUN 17th
We regret that we can’t sell you any wine this weekend, buts its for a good reason. Our daughter is getting married at the farm, so we are setting up for a ceremony, reception and campers. This is a happy occasion as we are not losing a daughter, and we are gaining a vineyard manager […]

March 27 – A Quick Visit North Found the Tundra Swans & Chickadees
We can still hear lots of swans in the evening at the Townsend lagoons, but they are dispersing further every day. Smaller flocks seem to use our farm as a way point as they usually turn overhead. We saw flocks on cornfields near Burford on Monday night, and near New Hamburg on Tuesday evening. In […]
